Mather, Richard. The Whole Booke of Psalmes, Faithfully Translated into English Metre.
1640
Also known as the Bay Psalm Book, it is printed by Stephen Daye in Cambridge. The first book published in the British Colonies, the 128-page psalter or hymn book is a literal translation of the Book of Psalms and considered by Puritan ministers to be more theologically correct than other versions. Editions published after 1651 are called the New England Psalm Book. The ninth edition, published in 1698, contains the first musical notation in any book printed in the British Colonies. The book is supplanted in popularity by a more poetic translation in the 18th century. Only 11 copies exist today, of which one is owned by the Old South Church and kept at the Boston Public Library. OnDemand Books prints a copy as the first book from its “Espresso book machine” at the Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge on September 29, 2009. The Old South Church sells the other copy it had owned to support its ministry in 2013.*
